Ground School

Aviation fundamentals made simple.

The theoretical foundation of your flight training, providing the essential knowledge required to become a safe and competent pilot — critical not only for passing examinations, but for making sound decisions in the air.

Where to begin

Two ways to do it

The same syllabus and the same standard, delivered to suit different learning styles and schedules.

01

In person, in the classroom

Traditional in-person classroom training, ideal for those who benefit from direct interaction with instructors.

02

Online, at your own pace

Flexible online, self-paced training, allowing you to study at your own pace from anywhere.

The licence itself

What ground school does

It is a course of instruction rather than a qualification, so it grants nothing by itself — it is what the examinations are passed on.

With a Ground School you can

  • Prepare you for your written theoretical examinations
  • Give you the knowledge to make sound decisions in the air
  • Run in a classroom or online, at your own pace

Not until you train further

  • Be a licence or a rating in itself — it is the theory behind one
  • Replace the flying: practical training happens in the aircraft

Both delivery options are designed to deliver the same high standard of knowledge and preparation.

Knowledge, handling and judgement

What it covers

The subjects Eagle Air names on its Ground School page.

  1. Understand: The key subjects behind every licence examination.

    • Air law
    • Meteorology
    • Navigation
    • Flight planning
    • Human performance
    • Aircraft technical knowledge
  2. Decide: Knowledge that matters in the air, not only in the examination room.

No surprises

What it takes

Ground school is where most students begin, and it asks for no flying experience.

01

Before you start

What you need to join.

  • No flying experience needed

    Eagle Air guidance
  • Entry requirements and course dates

Eagle Air's site does not publish entry requirements, intake dates or a subject prerequisite for ground school.

    To confirm

Licence requirement is set by the regulator; Eagle Air guidance is our own advice, not a condition of entry.

Honest numbers

How long it takes

The self-paced option has no fixed length by design, and Eagle Air publishes no duration for the classroom one. Rather than average the two into a number nobody stated, this page says so.

What changes it

Which option you choose
Classroom training runs to a schedule; the online option is self-paced, so its length is largely yours to set.
Which licence it is for
The theory behind a private licence and a commercial one are not the same size of task.

What it costs

What it costs

No price is published for ground school, and whether it is included in a licence course is confirmed with the training team.

What drives the total

  • Classroom or online

The two delivery options are not priced on the site.

  • Which licence the theory is for

Private, commercial and airline transport theory are different courses.

Alongside the flying

  • The SACAA theoretical examinations
  • Study material

What training fees include — the medical, the SACAA examinations, the skills test — is on the list of things to confirm with the school.

Common questions

The horizon after this one

What the theory is for

Ground school sits behind a licence rather than beside one. These are the licences it prepares you for.
